How to Listen to MOBI and AZW3 Books on iPhone

MOBI and AZW3 are Kindle formats that iPhone can't open on its own. SpeakCove reads DRM-free copies aloud without conversion. Kindle store purchases stay in Amazon's apps.

MOBI started as the Mobipocket ebook format, which Amazon bought and used for early Kindle books. AZW3, also called KF8, is its successor with better layout and styling. Both store compressed HTML inside the same Palm database (PDB) container. Today you mostly meet them in Calibre libraries, older ebook collections and Kindle-format downloads from sites like Project Gutenberg. The important limit: Kindle books bought from Amazon are DRM-protected and only open in Amazon's own apps and devices. DRM-free MOBI and AZW3 files can be read aloud elsewhere.

The Challenge

  • iOS has no built-in support for MOBI or AZW3. Apple Books reads EPUB and PDF, so a .mobi or .azw3 file in Files has nowhere to open.
  • Kindle books bought from Amazon are encrypted. No third-party reader can import them, so tools that promise to read "your Kindle library" only work with DRM-free files.
  • Converting to EPUB with Calibre works for DRM-free books, but it needs a computer, takes a step per book, and can move chapter breaks or drop images.

How to Listen with SpeakCove

  1. 1Make sure the file is DRM-free

Books from Calibre libraries, Project Gutenberg's Kindle downloads and authors who sell without DRM usually work. Files from Amazon's Kindle store do not.

  2. 2Import the MOBI or AZW3 file

Tap the file in Files or a mail attachment and share it to SpeakCove, or tap + > Import File in SpeakCove. There is no need to convert it to EPUB first. If the file is protected, SpeakCove tells you right away.

  3. 3Let SpeakCove lay out the book

SpeakCove decompresses the book's text, keeps its embedded images, picks up the title and author, and lays everything out as pages. A long novel takes a little longer than a PDF.

  4. 4Choose a voice and speed

Serena and Max are free. Speed goes from 0.75x to 1.75x, and the current sentence is highlighted so you can glance at the text when a name or term is unclear.

  5. 5Set the sleep timer for bedtime

Choose 5, 10, 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Playback stops on its own, and SpeakCove keeps the page and sentence for next time.

Other Methods

  1. Kindle app with Speak Screen

    • Works with Kindle books you bought from Amazon
    • Speak Screen is free and built into iOS
    • Uses the iOS system voices
    • Reads all text on the screen, not only the book
    • Each time you start it, it begins at the page on screen
  2. Convert with Calibre, then Apple Books with Speak Screen

    • Calibre is free and handles MOBI and AZW3 well
    • The resulting EPUB opens in Apple Books
    • Needs a Mac or PC
    • Only works on DRM-free files
    • Chapter breaks and images can shift during conversion
    • You still listen with the system voice
  3. Buy the Audible edition

    • Professional human narration
    • Nothing to import: buy it and play it in the Audible app
    • A separate purchase or credit for each book
    • Many books, especially older or niche ones, have no audio edition
